The energy transition is at a crossroads. On the one hand, the rapid deployment of renewable energy and storage is reshaping electricity systems and creating new opportunities for workers, industries, and regions. On the other, it is bringing to the surface a new set of economic and social challenges —ranging from investment and market design related issues, to distributional impacts and political feasibility— that could slow the pace and weaken the ambition of the transition. This public lecture will survey some of these challenges through the lenses of recent advances in economic research, highlighting the trade-offs policymakers face and the tools available to address them.
